A Jewish Blog entry

I hardly ever find the Jewish perspective on
headcoverings - perhaps I'm not looking under the
right words. Anyway, check out this blog - with
photos - concerning women fully covering at the
Wailing Wall. - <a

"Turkish Lawmakers Vote on Head Scarves"

Associated Press; Feb 9, 2008

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Parliament voted Saturday to
amend the constitution to lift a decades-old ban on
Islamic head scarves at Turkey's universities,
despite fierce opposition from the secular
establishment.

Tens of thousands of Turks demonstrated in the
capital, Ankara, against the amendments and called
for the government's resignation. "Turkey is
secular and will remain secular," they chanted,
many waving flags.

Head scarves have long been prohibited at
universities in predominantly Muslim but fiercely
secular Turkey, a country seeking to join the
European Union.

But Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called
the ban a trial for young Muslim women who are
forced to remove their head scarves at campus
entrances, noting that some resort to wearing wigs
to class to cover their heads.

In a final vote Saturday, lawmakers voted 411-103
to approve two constitutional amendments that will
add paragraphs saying everyone has the right to
equal treatment from state institutions and "no one
can be deprived of (his or her) right to higher
education."

"Schmoozing with Terrorists"

Review of the book "Schmoozing with Terrorists" by
Aaron Klein, in "The American Thinker". The
review states that: "in Schmoozing with Terrorists,
Aaron Klein -- Jerusalem bureau chief for World Net
Daily -- shares the wide-ranging conversations he
has had with many of the top Arab Palestinian
terrorist leaders in Israel about exactly that topic.

Klein's conversations covered the gamut from why
Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Fatah's al-Aqsa Martyrs
Brigades endorse the use of homicide bombing in
light of the Koranic ban on suicide; to the way in
which the terrorist leaders nakedly reject
documented archeological and historical connections
between Jews and Israel; to the ongoing persecution
of Christians by Muslims in Bethlehem, Gaza and
other cities."

Here's where he mentions the headcovering in his
interviews:

The failure of western women to conform to Islamic
standards of dress will reap harsh responses
including, if necessary, torture. Sheik Hamad, a
Hamas cleric, said those women who refuse to cover
themselves in conformity with Islamic values would
be punished either by imprisonment, whipping or
stoning. And we aren't just talking about
Madonna's bustiers: under the standard described
by Klein's interviewees, even Supreme Court Justice
Ruth Bader Ginsburg -- who does in fact wear a robe
-- would be a target for stoning. She's omitted
the head covering.

"Hijab How It Protects and Benefits women in Islam"

Article from Unique Pakistan

Very thorough article and study from the Quran.
Here is the introduction:

I want to INFORM you through the words of a sister,
why and how hijab (Islamic code of dress) protects
a woman and what are its advantages. This is not
coming from me but from a WESTERN woman who was
born and raised in the western culture, spent most
of her life on the wild side, found a deep vacuum
in her life, discovered Islam, accepted it
wholeheartedly, and turned her life around
completely - for the better. This sister is an
Irish American, has a Ph.D., teaches in a
prestigious US university, wears hijab wherever she
goes - in the class rooms while teaching, in the
conferences and meetings she attends. She is very
proud of Islam and her hijab and in the following
explains the advantages and wisdom of wearing
hijab. So please read with an open mind. Those who
are open to reason get the guidance and better
their lives, but those who have "eyes but can't
see, and ears but can't hear" will wander in the
wilderness of life forever. No amount of logical
reasoning will help them. However, our job as
Muslims, i.e., those who surrendered to Allah, is
ONLY to convey the message to the darkest corners
of the world. Our job as Muslims is not to impose
anything on disbelievers because as Allah says in
Quran, "For you is your religion, and for them is
theirs".

Interesting thoughts from Levitical law

From a found blog:

"And there was a ritual for people to do if they
were unclean. They have to wear torn clothes, have
unkempt or uncovered hair, cover the lower part of
his face, and go around yelling, "Unclean!
Unclean!" This person is to be left alone, and live
outside the camp. Makes sense, I guess, you want to
isolate that type of stuff. If people were
required to wear head coverings, and there was
someone not wearing a head covering...you could
tell at a distance that something was wrong.
[emphasis mine - lm] Covering the mouth
makes sense. You wouldn't spread infection that
way. The infected person had to heal on their own.
The infected person had to watch out for the people
who weren't, to protect them."

The Royal Ascot Rules Still Apply

href="http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/queen-orders-ascot-fillies-to-cover-up/2008/01/16/1200419887999.html"
target="_blank">Queen orders Ascot fillies to cover
up
Julia May; January 17, 2008; The Age

A guidance issued to the 80,000 members of the
racecourse's Royal Enclosure specifies that
strapless dresses, spaghetti straps and
halter-necks are out. And mismatching trouser suits
are a no-no. Women must wear a hat - or at the very
least a "substantial fascinator" (ornate clip or
head-covering). And men not wearing a top hat,
morning suit and waistcoat can forget it.

Complaints by traditionalists about rising levels
of flesh at the exclusive racecourse have been
heard, it seems, by Ascot's governing board,
chaired by the Queen's representative, the Duke of
Devonshire. Those who transgress the dress code
will be turned away on the Duke's orders.

posting here as well. In it, the comparative
scriptures and reasonings and examples of the three
"Abrahimic Faiths" are presented and discussed.
